Tips on Searching the Library Catalog

SCHS Library has tens of thousands of books on its shelves, and we understand that it can be overwhelming to search through all that!

Here we have some tips for searching the catalog to find a book for research or for leisure!

Tips and Tricks:

    1. When conducting a Standard Search, you can use the scrolling menu on the left side of the search bar to narrow down your search.

      • Search by Subject if there is a specific subject that interests you. Books that mention that deal subject will show up in the search.

      • Search by Author Keyword if you have a specific author in mind that interests you.

      • Search by Title if you have a specific book in mind.

    2. You can also conduct an Advanced Search.

      • With this tool, you can search results by the material type with the Add Search Fields option and include more than one search term.

    3. When you on the book record page, on the right of the page, you will see a menu for Similar Items. This is how you can find books similar to the ones you are interested in!

    4. You can see whether a book is available or not by looking at its record. On the middle of the page, you will see a box labeled Record Information. If the book is available, there will be a 1 (or however many copies we have) in the green box. If it is checked out, there will be a 1 (or however many copies are checked out) in the red box.

    5. Our Pathfinders are also a good resource when searching for books on a specific subject.

We hope these tips help you better understand the catalog, but if you have any questions you can always email Veronica and Sierra, or come into the library!
