Rules, Expectations, & Privileges

Greely's Library is a place for quiet study, research, collaborative work, teaching, learning, and reading. The spaces in the Library facility and its technology tools are available for teachers to use with students and for students to use independently for academic activities.

BEHAVIOR WHILE USING THE LIBRARY FACILITIES

• Students must know and observe the school’s Student Technology Devices and Internet Use policy regarding the use of electronic devices and the school’s network.

• Students must be respectful of staff and students, work quietly, and clean up after themselves. No more than 4 students will be permitted to sit at a table.

• Tidy snacks are permitted in the library. Drinks are permitted only if they are securely covered and kept away from books, electronic devices, and other equipment. Students may NOT eat lunch in the library.

• Any student who leaves the Library for any reason must sign out, noting their full name, their destination, and the time that they leave; and sign back in upon their return.

• Students who do not observe these rules may be asked to leave by library staff or other teachers. Arguing with staff members or repeated disregard for library rules may result in a suspension of privileges for visiting the library facilities for a time period to be determined by the librarian. If this occurs, the student’s study hall teachers and the assistant principal will be notified.

BORROWING PRIVILEGES

Students may have up to 5 books checked out a time. The lending period for books is 3 weeks. Books may be renewed once if no one else has requested the title.

Students who do not have access to a computer may sign a device out of the library to use for the day. Students are responsible for the device while signed out under their name. All aspects of the Student Technology Devices and Internet Use policy apply during use both inside and outside of school since the device is a school owned device.

Library materials must be treated carefully and returned in the same condition that they were issued. Library equipment is to be used for learning and school-related activities only. Students must bring materials back promptly so that others may use them. Students must replace or pay the replacement cost of anything they lose or damage beyond repair. Students who have overdue library materials will not be allowed to check out other materials and may lose other library privileges as well, including access to full period Study Passes.

ONLINE LIBRARY RESOURCES

Access to online library resources, including eBooks and subscription databases, is limited to current students and staff only. Login information and passwords can be obtained from the librarian, or by logging into the district issued email/ document drive account and viewing the protected (non-public) sections of the GHS Library Database page.

VISITING THE LIBRARY

Students are welcome to visit the Library during the day as their schedule and the Library's schedule allow. Students must have a pass to visit the Library facilities during the school day.

AFTER SCHOOL

The Library and its facilities will be open when a member of the library staff is available to supervise after school. Usually, this will include after school until 4:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is a late bus that leaves at 4:15 Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Students can obtain a pass for the Late Bus from library staff.

BRIEF VISITS (15 MINS OR LESS)

Students can obtain a Hall Pass from their teacher. Students should make their way promptly to the Library from their study hall, give one of the librarians their pass when they arrive, and get it signed to take back to their teacher when they leave.

LONGER VISITS

Students may sign up for a full period study hall pass using the Google Forms linked on the library's homepage. Passes for each day will be available for reservation beginning at 6:30 am. Email or come see the librarians if you have difficulty obtaining passes. You must go to your study hall to show the pass you receive via email to your study hall teacher after they take attendance. You should make your way promptly to the Library from your study hall, give your name to one of the librarians for attendance, and get right to work. Coming and going to lockers and bathrooms should be taken care of during the passing periods whenever possible. Any student who leaves the Library for any reason must sign out, noting your full name, your destination, and the time that you leave; and sign back in upon your return. There may be times when the Library facilities are too full to accommodate every request for a pass.

Studying in the library during a study hall period is a privilege and is intended as an opportunity for students to improve their academic standing. If a students' behavior or use of the library facilities is counter-productive, if they are not using the time for studying or they would be better served by working in a classroom with the support of a teacher, then teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, or administrators may suspend a student's study hall privileges in the library.
