What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund. The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour. Earth Hour 2023 in Singapore falls on Saturday, 25 March, 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
Since 1970, 193 countries around the world have been commemorating Earth Day on 22 April annually. Various events are held across the globe to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
Climate change is one of the major environmental challenges of our time. The main cause of climate change is the emission and buildup of greenhouse gases. This can result in higher temperatures, rising sea levels, and changes in weather patterns.
In Singapore, the most significant greenhouse gas emitted is carbon dioxide, primarily produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and gas to meet our energy demands. Given our limited potential for alternative energy sources, improving energy efficiency is our key strategy for reducing emissions.
In our own household, we can try to be more energy-efficient by adopting energy-saving habits. These acts can go a long way in helping Singapore in its energy conservation efforts as well as helping households save money.
At St. Anthony’s Primary School, during one of the TACT (Teachers-Anthonians Contact Time) lessons, students played games and watched videos to learn about the importance of energy conservation and how to save energy in their own household.
The school will also be joining in the Earth hour movement to show support for our planet on the 25th of March. We will be switching off half our classrooms’ lights and fans.
