3. Orton-Gillingham

This year, we are using Orton-Gillingham (or OG) as our systematic, sequential, Multi Sensory Learning method of teaching reading and writing skills. OG explicitly teaches the connections between letters and sounds. This program helps students understand the rules and patterns found in our language. With those skills, students are more easily able to decode (sound out) and encode (write). Programs like Wilson and Fundations® are other scientifically based Multi Sensory Learning (MSL) programs that use Orton-Gillingham principles. We are excited to delve more deeply into this approach.

At the 2nd grade level, we will continue to work on syllable patterns within the English language. Only 15% of the words in our language are truly trick words. Many of the words we use have Greek, Latin, and other derivations, and once we unlock those roots and affixes (prefixes and suffixes), many of the spelling patterns become less problematic.

I will be adding more information to this page, as time allows.
