Reading

This year, Ute Meadows is piloting a new reading program called Into Reading. It "combines the best practices of balanced literacy with comprehensive coverage of English Language Arts curriculum standards." The program uses a workshop model which is used to develop collaborative, self-directed learners, build content knowledge, support vocabulary and language development, build foundational reading skills, foster critical thinking and deep analysis of text, and make meaningful connections between reading and writing.

We will continue to meet with small reading groups, where we continue to build strong decoding skills and work with leveled texts. We will also read a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and visual texts. Students will have time during workshop to read to self, read to others, listen to reading, write, and focus on word work. We will also focus on reading strategies to build comprehension, read with accuracy and fluency, and expand vocabulary. Links below will explain each of these more fully. Close Reading passages, which we read several times, allow us to dig deeper to fully understand the meaning of the text.
