Although I was born a US citizen, I did not actually reside here until I attended college. My parents worked for the Department of State serving with American Embassies in the Foreign Service around the world for almost 30 years. I was born in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar), and I lived in ten countries before graduating high school. My preschool years were spent in Guatemala and Belgium. I lived my elementary years in Paraguay, Indonesia, and Iran. Two months were spent in US public school classrooms (St. Louis, MO & Pepeekeo, HI) during my 3rd grade year, as school calendars differed during the transition between posts. Middle School was spent in Japan, while Kenya and Egypt saw me through my high school years. My parents and younger brother continued on to Bolivia during my first two years in college, and I enjoyed visiting on several occasions. My parents moved to Malaysia during my last three years in college. I even did my student teaching there, hoping to continue this lifestyle. Before retiring, my parents spent their last two years in Hong Kong, where I visited them as well. As a family, we took advantage of our situation and enjoyed visiting surrounding countries wherever we were stationed. I have lost count, but I can safely say I have been in over 100 cities worldwide! My overseas encounters have given me great insight on world cultures, history and geography, and my students enjoy hearing about my unique experiences throughout the school year.
At Colorado State University and Metropolitan State College, I simultaneously pursued my B.S. Degree in Human Development & Family Studies and Elementary Education certification. I landed my first teaching job with Jefferson County Public Schools in 1988 and have been teaching here ever since. In the spring of 2008, I obtained my Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on technology, as I truly enjoy using technology with my students!
I currently teach 2nd grade, but I have also taught Kindergarten, a 1/2 Multi-age classroom, a 2/3 Combination, and 3rd grade. I love the enthusiasm of primary students, and I consider myself lucky to work in a field I truly love! When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, traveling, dabbling with photography, exploring technology and learning new things.
