2. Geography: People Interacting with the Environment (Tools, People, and Places)

This unit has two main focuses. The first focus is on human and physical interaction. Students will come to understand that:

  • individuals and communities manage, modify, and depend on their environment

  • physical features of that environment affect individual and community activities

  • communities change over time when people modify the physical environment

The second focus pulls in components of spatial inquiry. Students will learn that people use geographic terms and tools to understand people and places. They will:

  • use map components to gather information to answer questions about people and places

  • identify the hemispheres, equator, and poles on a globe

  • use maps, keys / legends, and locate unique features (human and physical)
