Good Reader Characteristics

Good readers exhibit the following characteristics. They:

Ø Enjoy reading

Ø Have favorite books, genres and authors

Ø Have preferences about when and where they read

Ø Talk about and recommend books they have read

Ø Select appropriately leveled materials

Ø Read and sustain independent reading for longer periods of time

Ø Use text features to help them preview a text

Ø Predict and pose questions before and while they read

Ø Read aloud meaningful phrases with appropriate expression

Ø Read at an appropriate reading rate with a high percent of accuracy

Ø Use effective strategies and sources to problem-solve unknown words, monitor word choice, and self-correct significant miscues

Ø Construct meaning and demonstrate understanding orally or in writing

Ø Make connections to own personal experience, other texts or understanding of the world

Ø Make inferences to interpret what has been read

Ø Determine importance and evaluate what has been read

Ø Support responses using information from the text and/or own schema
