Hiring
To be hired as head coach you must meet the qualifications of M.S.122A.33. Subd. 1: License and Degree Exemption for Head Coach notwithstanding section 122A.15, subdivision 1. If you are hired as a new coach your continued employment is dependent on you meeting the below requirements.
To be qualified for a head coach you must
Be a licensed teacher (MN Statute 122A.15)
Have MN coaching license
Four year degree with a coaching minor
-Or-
Take a coaching education course. A school district may employ a head varsity coach of an interscholastic sport at its secondary school a person who does not have a license as head varsity coach of interscholastic sports and who does not have a bachelor’s degree if both of the conditions below are met.
In the judgment of the school board, the person has the knowledge and experience necessary to coach the sport;
Can verify completion of six quarter credits, or the equivalent, or 60 clock hours of instruction in first aid and the care and prevention of athletic injuries; and can verify completion of a coaching methods or theory course.
Individuals with a four year degree that includes a coaching minor may be employed as a head varsity coach.

Non-Renewal of Head Coach after season
Non-Renewal MN Statute 122A.58 Sub. 1
If a school board (designee) decide to non-renew a licensed or non-licensed coach they must
A) Notify within 14 days of decision
B) If coach requests reasons in writing it must be provided with in 10 days of request
C) Coach has an opportunity for a hearing in front of board to respond to reason for non-renewal (public or non-public)
D) Due process must include notifying coach of rights (This is your notification)

Termination of Coach or Advisor during season

Required to hold a license
Must notify in writing 14 days
May request hearing within 25 days (must notify of options)
Board must reply with in 10 days in writing.
