Academic Expectations
Athletics and activities are important and offer students great opportunities for growth, but academic achievement is the focus of Bloomington Jefferson High School. In order to participate in athletics/activities a student must maintain a minimum number of credits (see below). If the student athlete doesn't have the necessary credits, they are eligible to practice, but not play/participate in competitions until the proper number of credits have been earned.
Grades are reviewed each trimester. Students experiencing academic difficulty should talk with their coach and meet with their teacher immediately as early in the trimester as possible. Academic concerns should come before participation. It is better to miss a practice or game to get help than to miss a large part of the season due to a failing grade.
To be eligible for extracurricular activities, students must be making progress towards graduation. Considering this, Bloomington Schools has established the following academic requirements to be eligible for participation.
9th Graders
First trimester freshmen must have been promoted from eighth grade.
Second trimester freshmen must have earned 4 credits out of 6 during their first trimester before being eligible.
Third trimester freshmen must have earned 8 out of 12 credits before being eligible.
10th Graders
First trimester sophomores must have earned 14 credits out of 18 before being eligible.
Second trimester sophomores must have earned 19 credits out of 24 before being eligible.
Third trimester sophomores must have earned 24 credits out of 30 before being eligible.
11th Graders
First trimester juniors must have earned 30 credits out of 36 before being eligible.
Second trimester juniors must have earned 35 credits out of 42 before being eligible.
Third trimester juniors must have earned 40 credits out of 48 before being eligible.
12th Graders
First trimester seniors must have earned 46 credits out of 54 before being eligible.
Second trimester seniors must have earned 51 credits out of 60 before being eligible.
Third trimester seniors must have earned 56 credits out of 66 before being eligible.
Any student who is within (3) three credits of making progress towards
graduation, according to the Academic Eligibility Guidelines, will be placed on
an academic contract in order to continue participation. The student will
continue to be eligible as long as the contract goals are being met at the time of
midterm and end-of-trimester grading reviews.
Any student who is more than (3) three credits short of making progress towards
graduation, according to the Academic Eligibility Guidelines, will be
immediately ineligible for participation.
**For extenuating circumstances not foreseen in this Regulation, there is an appeal
process to seek a waiver of the academic eligibility rule. The Regulation and
appeal forms may be obtained from the Activities Director or Principal of the
high school.
