In this required course, students are introduced to basic materials concepts relevant to electrical engineering including energy band diagrams, insulators, conductors, and semiconductors. Bonding in common semiconductor device materials is also discussed along with conduction and valence bands. Semiconductor device doping, including donors and acceptors, Fermi energy and level, carrier transport mechanisms (drift, diffusion, and generation/recombination), and conductivity, resistivity, and mobility are covered. Topics also include the operation of diodes and selected transistor types. Student outcomes are not formally assessed in this course.
