9:45-10:15 - Today's focus: Communication/interpersonal skills/coaching conversations
The WHY - Video and VIP/MVP
In this Partnership Principles video clip, Jim Knight examines the great thinkers in the area of dialogue to underscore the importance of conversation in all of our interactions. If we want real change in education or in anything else, we need to change the conversation.
As you watch the video, what are some VIPs (Very Important Points)? Discuss as a table group and come to consensus on one MVP (Most Valuable Point). Write on chart paper and post around the room.
10:15-10:30 - Break
10:30-11:30 - The HOW - Quotation Mingle. HOW do coaches incorporate effective communication into their practice?
Read your quote and make notes on what stands out to you and how the information in your quotation can impact coaching
Group all like-colored quotations together to discuss - everyone "on the same page"
Mingle: talk to someone with each different quote.
Read your quote to your partner.
Partners discuss the quote and both partners' interpretations
Switch and repeat with the other partner
Repeat until you have "mingled" with four other people
RULES:
You may only partner with one other person at a time
You must keep possession of your paper the entire time.
Return to your table group. What were your takeaways from the quotes you heard and discussed? How can coaches incorporate effective communication into their practice?
11:30-12:45 - Lunch on your own
12:45-2:00 - Reflective Listening
Part 1: Reflective Listening overview
Part 2: Application of Reflective Listening
Think about a challenge or situation in your personal or professional life that you will be willing to share with someone else.
Frame your situation in your mind by freewriting for 3 minutes.
Find a partner to apply the reflective listening steps.
Assign Partner A and Partner B. First round, B is the "sharer" and A is the "reflective listener."
Repeat with Partner A as sharer and B as reflective listener
Reflective Listening Cheat Sheet - reflective listening steps and prompts/questions if the conversation stalls
Debrief - Discuss with a new partner:
To what extent did you actually practice reflective listening?
What was it like as a listener?
What was it like as the speaker?
How will you use reflective listening as a coach?
2:00-2:30 - Summary, wrap up, reflection
Strategies used/modeled today:
MVP/VIP
Quotation mingle
Reflective listening
What did you gain from today that you can use in your coaching?
Next month's topic: habits and systems that lead to goal achievement
