Transport

By Train

Within the UK, by far the best way to get to York is by train. York has direct services from London King's Cross (approx. 2hrs), Newcastle (approx. 1hr), Edinburgh (approx. 2.5hrs), Manchester (approx. 1.5hrs), Birmingham (approx. 2.25hrs), and Leeds (approx 0.5hrs). Many other stations also have direct trains, and York connects to all UK rail stations via the national rail network. For more details, train routes and times, and for links to company websites for cheap advanced purchase tickets, visit www.nationalrail.co.uk.

By Intercity Coach

Within the UK, a cheaper option is via low cost intercity coaches. York is served by National Express (www.nationalexpress.co.uk), and Megabus (www.megabus.com), both of whom run cheap, but slow, services to York. National Express offer a variety of destinations, whereas Megabus are often cheaper, but only serve London, using a mixed coach and train service. Both companies arrive at or near the railway station. In addition to UK destinations, National Express also offer services from European destinations via their Eurolines service (www.eurolines.com).

From Europe, by Eurostar

Eurostar (www.eurostar.com) offer services to London St Pancras station from Lille, Paris, Brussels, and some smaller stations in northern France, as well as connected services across Europe. Upon arrival at London St Pancras, walk next door to King's Cross station, where services to York depart. We strongly recommend you buy tickets in advance to save money. For cheap tickets from London to York, visit www.eastcoast.co.uk. Don't worry if your Eurostar is delayed: provided you've left enough time to walk between stations, Eurostar will validate your ticket for another service if your Eurostar arrives late. Just go to the information desk in St Pancras when you arrive.

By Plane

York does not have it's own airport, but is near to a number of airports which serve locations in Europe and around the world. Clear ground transportation information will be available on each airport's website, but a summary is below. We list the airports here in approximate order of convenience:

We don't recommend you fly to a London airport if you can avoid it, but if you do choose to fly to one of London's airports, you should then do the following:

    • London City Airport: use London transportation (light rail and underground train) to reach King's Cross, then take the train as above.

    • London Heathrow or Gatwick Airport: Take the Heathrow or Gatwick express train to central London (from Heathrow the train arrives at Paddington station and from Gatwick it arrives at Victoria station). From here, use the underground network to reach King's Cross and take the train as above

    • London Luton Airport: Take a train to London St Pancras, then walk next door to King's Cross and take a train as above

    • London Stansted Airport: Take a train to Peterborough, from where there are direct trains to York, taking about an hour.

In all these cases, you can visit www.tfl.gov.uk for information on London ground transportation services. Rail services from London can be reached from www.nationalrail.co.uk.
