Geoffrey Maynard of York

Sir Geoffrey Maynard of York, OL, KSCA

MKA: Jeff Whiting

Passed: July 13 2021

It is hard to eulogize someone who you always perceived as more legend than person. Over the years, when he spoke to me, I always found myself subtly looking over my shoulder, searching for who he must be addressing and surprised every time I realized it was me.

Geoffrey was dauntless, encyclopedic, unyielding, and he set a continuously high bar for others, but a higher one for himself. He was fierce in the arts, on the field, in defense of his Kingdom, when he saw someone in need, but fiercest in his love for his brilliant wife and beautiful daughter whom he adored with all of his being. Jennifer and Whitney were his sun and north star, and you could watch him track them with his eyes as they moved about an event if he was not beside them. Every time his gaze fell upon them it softened. It was the face of love.

He was not an easy man to get to know, but if you did, you were one of the lucky ones. He radiated knowledge and exuded teaching so much so that by just spending time in his presence and listening to his words, later you would always discover that you had learned something new and possibly quite obscure, but still incredibly interesting. Geoffrey knew some of the most fantastic tail ends of information about such a wide assortment of subjects that it was a bit like spending time with a half dozen college professors. Someone who accidentally teaches, because he was also so driven to learn that he was happy to share his information if anyone had interest.

Geoffrey was a master artisan, a knight, a tireless teacher, a helping hand, an active member of both the SCA and the Adrian Empire, a friend, a husband and a father. He touched many lives and his passing leaves an empty place which will be incredibly difficult to fill, if ever it can be filled again. Perhaps, perhaps we should just leave this space and let it stand in memory of solemn inspiration and quiet dignity and the occasional wry smile.
