Collared Earthstar (Geastrum triplex)

Post date: Sep 13, 2013 8:35:41 AM

Our focus for September is one of the beautiful Earthstars, Geastrum triplex. It is a fungus of well drained soils, usually in deciduous woods, and is known from across the Central Belt of Scotland. It is locally abundant in East Lothian, but does not appear further north than Fife. The most recent record from St. Andrews suggests it may occur further up the east (or indeed the west) coast, so can you help search for it? More photos and details can be found in the full species profile.

As usual, please keep an eye out for this fungus and then either let us know you've found it or submit the record to your local fungus group. Also, remember that the ever growing list of 'Fungus of the Month' profiles is available here, ordered alphabetically or by its highlight month. We are always keen to hear about new records for any of these species at any time.
