CLASS R-1 4-8-2

R-1 Class consisted of forty-nine engines: ten built by Richmond in 1919 (3300-09), thirty built by Schenectady in 1920 (3310-39) and nine in 1924 (3340-48). The first 25 Schenectady engines were classed R-1-a before feedwater heaters were installed and R-1-b after the installation; Schenectady engines originally built with feedwater heaters were R-1-b.

3300 as delivered by the United States Railroad Administration in 1919 with Baker valve gear and fabricated rear truck.

The 1920 group had Southern valve gear, a cast rear truck and a rear mounted sand dome.

The sand dome was again forward on the final ten built in 1924.

R-1-a 3311 has been modified with an Elesco feed water heater (becoming an R-1-b), pilot mounted compressors and a non-lifting injector.

3320 has received a Vanderbuilt tender. Southampton St. Boston June 1940.

3321 has received a twelve-wheel tender. Southampton Street June 1939.
