Some A-1's received new Cylinder blocks. 1272 is at South Station on July 28, 1930 during the removal of the

train shed at South Station. The banner reads "Steel Bridges and Buildings - The Boston Bridge Works".

A-1 1258 was later rebuilt with a superheater, piston valves, new cylinders, and Southern valve gear and classified A-1-a.

A-2 CLASS - 16 built by the Rhode Island Locomotive Works in 1893 as 240-255 renumbered 1230-1255. All used Anthracite coal. 254 and 255 had compound cylinders but were soon simpled. All were rebuilt with drivers reduced from 78" to 69" and cylinder bore reduced from 20" to 18" and reclassified C-15-a 1566-1574.
