In this Empathy Cafe, we will use the Empathy Circle process to constructively dialogue about our visions for XR and 'RUSHING THE EMERGENCY? STORY AND VISION FOR XR IN 2020' by Rupert Read, Skeena Rathor, Marc Lopatin.

Empathy Circle 1: Discuss Extinction Rebellion (XR) Vision 2020
Some rough notes.
Instead of having just one person listen. It’s better to listen together in a circle.
XR wants it, - ie support,
Instead of all the weight on one person.
Had an action. They have a regen tent. Have a professional listener. Seemed odd to some people. They are looking for the next steps.
Feel some frustration - with Vision 2020 was not very clear. Hard to understand.. Maybe it needs to be re-framed to make it more accessible.
Edwin’s idea with empathy circles in Berkeley. Talking about taking over the capitol in Sacramento. In France people are more connected than in the US.
I am in alignment with the vision.. How can we bring non white middle class people along.
How to do this. How to create more diversity of the movement. Create a specific movement or a different story..
Flesh out the 3 demands. Flesh them out to people, clarify them.
Fell a bit alarmed about XR America
Sounds divisive - XR internal democracy needs a lot of attention.
XR has not effectively reflected and learned from the oct rebellion.
Oct Rebellion was not as effective as April rebellion
XR Listens.. And LGBT doing listening (canvasing)
People change the opinions on their own.. There is a lesson there for XR..
Get too passionate and maybe not do it since it turns people off
Marta.. Want xr to succeed. But it’s a huge task. We need to grow up.
Would need to address so many problems.
We need to reevaluate everything.
The time is short. It makes me want to laugh.. It’s good to be alive.
About France.. The activists here in the US.. and I have despair.
Don’t even want to be an American.
The local activists can’t talk with other activists.
They are fucking morons, assholes.
They did a workshop on how to do restorative circles.. But they will not talk with James.
Frightens me about level of hypocrisy
Makes me want to be a Nazi.. When leftists will not talk to other leftists.
My Vision 2020 - spread empathy through XR - get everyone to facilitate
Strong energy.. Released tears, deep laughter
Hearing the struggles under the surface.. Like feeling judged and having to prove oneself.
I’m not so alone.
Feeling heard about it.
Next steps. At the end we have just listened to each other.
Issue of social power/repression and how to address it. Perhaps with taking on the political powers that be.
