November Week 1 - NATIONALS!!!

Here's the thing about winning.

When you win first place in something, you get to share your story with everyone else from outside your team. It's easy for everyone to understand - they won, so they HAVE to be great, right?! We got to experience this in 2021 at TOB States, and it was certainly a joy! Since then, the band program has only grown stronger, but we don't have a first place trophy to show for it. What's the deal?

When you don't win first place, your story stays within the walls of your team, and explaining to someone from outside of the team how much the journey has meant can be difficult. For instance, take the 2022 Philadelphia Eagles, who went 14-3 in the regular season, won the NFC East, and the NFC, but lost in the Super Bowl (BTW, it most certainly was not holding).

This activity is subjective. We can never change what another band does, and our outcome lies solely in the opinion of a few specific individuals. To be frank, back in the spring when I signed us up for NJMBDA, I knew exactly how states would go on paper for us. That's not to say we're not a great band - we've just been very used to being a big fish in a small pond over the past few years, and this year, we were finally ready to become a big fish in a WAY BIGGER POND. Thinking beyond even just this year, we're ready for new goals and new levels that can be reached from here.

Winning isn't just about beating others though. It's about being better than you were yesterday, and overcoming your own challenges and obstacles, which there are so much more of than other bands. It's not about how hard you can hit...

We won the moment we loaded the buses on Sunday.

There is no placement, score, or caption award that can capture what it took to deliver our performance on Sunday. Courage. Resilience. Love. We did what we had to for our team, and our teammate, and we got the job done. Here is a video of that special performance. I could not be more proud of you all for coming together as a family through the events of this weekend and being there for each other. I am honored to be a part of this journey with you all. Let's do it one last time, together.
