cold day
Read the canticle of Daniel - Dan3:57-88; and write down what it says about cold, frost, chill, ice and snow. What do you think that means?
Finish hw that was due wednesday if not done.
hw chemthink atomic structure
hw pd3 ch2 wiki reflection
Next: click on periodic table of videos http://www.periodicvideos.com/. look at some of the videos, then choose an element that interests you the most, Record 3 properties of your element on the spreadsheet. Do an element someone else has not done.

due friday:
Objective: Calculate subatomic particles from charges, at #, and mass #, calculate protons, neutrons, electrons in elements, isotopes, ions
lesson: read these notes from ch3 - about isotopes, ions, atomic number and mass, protons, neutrons, electrons;
• Electrons – negative charge -almost no mass, outside the nucleus
• Protons – positive charge -1amu in mass- in the nucleus
• Neutrons – no charge – 1 amu in mass – in the nucleus
Atomic number and mass
• Atomic number is # protons; identifies the element
• Atomic mass is the # protons + # neutrons
• Electrons are equal to protons in a neutral atom
Isotopes
• Same element with different masses
• Caused by different # neutrons
• Example C-12 and C-14 (hyphen notation) both have 6 protons, but C with mass of 12 has 6 neutrons and C with mass of 14 has 8 neutrons.
• Nuclear symbol 23592 U
• Average of naturally occurring isotopes on the p.t.
hw-- do chemthink isotopes tutorial and questions. due fri
if you wish to work ahead, read these notes:
Ions
• neutral atoms have equal numbers of protons and electrons. ions have gained or lost electrons. As a result, ions have a charge. For example, sodium atoms have 13 electrons, but sodium ions (+1 charge) have 12 electrons
• + charged ions have lost electrons
• - charged ions have gained electrons
if you wish to work ahead, after reading these notes, do chemthink ions and/or
work on pne worksheet. this is not due friday, but will be due next week.
