ch5 reactivity trends of elements lab

1. carefully place a small amount of Na in beaker about 1/2 full of water. Do not place your face directly over the beaker. Record your observations

2. rinse beaker thoroughly, then add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein to the 1/2 beaker of water, then add small piece of Na. Record your observations.

3. Write a chemical equation with states for the reaction in 1&2. What is phenolphthalein? Which product is the base? Which product catches fire?

4. watch demo with K. record observations, write equation. Which product is the base? When have you seen that color of fire before? watch braniac , then place alkali metals in order of reactivity, most to least

5. watch demo with Na, Fe, and Mg. Record your observations. Rank these elements in order of reactivity, most to least. Were there chemical reactions? if so, what is produced?

6. watch light bulb demo. Was there a reaction? if so, what was produced? What gas was inside the bulb before it was broken? why? what element is the filament made of? why? place the gases involved in order of reactivity, most to least. Write equations for reactions in 5&6.
