ch3 al foil lab answers

If you missed the lab, use my information: Foil mass 4.58g ; foil length 29cm; foil width 21cm; old pennies are about 3.10g, new pennies about 2.50g.

Also, when done, put your data & results on the form ; everyone must do this page and the form.

Aluminum Foil lab Name__________________pd_______

Purpose: Calculate the thickness of a piece of aluminum foil, then calculate the number of atoms present in the foil

Procedure, Measurements, and Calculations:

1. Use the density of aluminum (density worksheet or text or internet) and the mass of your piece of foil to find the volume. Be sure to show the work and formula below, labeling your answers.

Mass_____4.58g________ Calculation of volume: v=m/d= 4.58g/2.7g/cc= 1.7cc

Density_____2.7g/cc______

2. Use the volume from above, the length and width of your foil to calculate thickness (height) of your foil.

Volume____1.7cc_______ Calculation of thickness: v=lwh . 1.7= 29*21*h

Length___29cm_________ h=0.0028cm

Width_____21cm________

3. Use the mass of your foil and the atomic mass of aluminum to find the moles of aluminum. Do you have more or less than 1 mole? _________

mass__4.58g_______ Calculation of moles: 4.58g/1 * 1mole/27.0g =

atomic mass Al__27.0_______ 0.170 mole

4. Use the moles of aluminum from above and Avogadro’s number to find the number of atoms of aluminum in your foil.

Moles of aluminum__0.170mol_______ Calculation of atoms: 0.170mol/1 *

Avogadro’s number _6.02 *1023___________ 6.02 *1023atoms/1mol =

1.02 *1023atoms

5. Using the number of atoms from above and the population of the world, find out how many atoms you could give each person in the world. ( you will have to use scientific notation) Can you give each person more than 1million atoms?__yes! a million is 106 !

# atoms in your foil____1.02 *1023atoms_______ Calculation of atoms per person:

population of the world ___7.59*109_____ (round to 2 or 3 digits) .

1.02 *1023atoms/7.59*109people = .135*1014atoms per person =

1.35*1013atoms per person

6. Divide the thickness of the foil by the diameter of an atom to find out how many atoms thick the foil is. (you will need to use scientific notation) Is it more than 10,000 atoms thick? ___________ Calculation of atoms thick: #atoms thick =

thickness____.0028cm________ . 2.8 *10-3 / 2.86 *10-8 =

diameter of an atom 2.86 *10-8cm . .98 *105atoms thick = 9.8*104atoms thick =

approximately 100,000 atoms thick!

7. Find the number of moles and the number of atoms in an old penny. (Old pennies are mainly copper) , then repeat with a new penny (they are mainly zinc) Hint: you will have to weigh them.
