ch8 lab test rev

Look at the notes on chapter 8 about the 5 types of chemical reactions, terms used in chemical reactions, and balancing equations.

In part 1, we mixed solutions; look at the picture on the home page to see the results; the written table is in the power point notes. When there was a precipitate, we would write a chemical reaction for the double displacement reaction. We used the solubility table on pg 860 to help us to identify which product was soluble (aq) and which was the insoluble precipitate (s) example. There is an S by the soluble product; anything else is insoluble - the precipitate. Tap water has chemicals in it that react with the lead II nitrate.

In part 2, we mixed hydrogen peroxide solution with yeast. The yeast acted as a catalyst (placed above the arrow), causing a decompostion reaction that produced oxygen gas and water liquid. We tested for oxygen and hydrogen (see ch8 reactions lab on side bar). We knew there must be another product besides oxygen; since the gas test told us it was not hydrogen gas, the only other possibility was water. Hydrogen peroxide is very unstable. It decomposes in the presence of blood and light, which is why it is kept in a brown bottle. This reaction was a decompostion reaction; the test tube was hot, so it was also exothermic.

In part 3, we mixed zinc and hydrochloric acid solution. Hydrogen gas was produced and identified with the hydrogen test. It is lighter than air, hence the upside down tube. Besides hydrogen gas, zinc chloride solution (aqueus) is also produced. We would have to evaporate the water to see the zinc chloride. The test tube got hot; it was exothermic; and this was a single displacement reaction. When Hydrogen gas is ignited it combines with oxygen gas to make water vapor. This reaction is a synthesis reaction, and also exothermic. The bunsen burner is an example of combustion. When any hydrocarbon such as methane burns, it combines with oxygen to make carbon dioxide gas and water vapor.
