ch8 s.r. reactions lab

Day 1: predict if these 10 reactions will happen:

aluminum metal in copper II sulfate solution.

•copper metal into aluminum sulfate solution.

lead fishing sinker in water.

new penny in Hydrochloric acid

old penny in HCL(aq).

potassium in water

new penny and oxygen

gold ring in oxygen

copper and silver nitrate solution

sodium iodide and lead II nitrate solutions. demo (hint: this can't be predicted with activity series)

hw day 1 use the activity series to predict which of these 10 will react, and write equations for the ones that react. If they don't react, say why. If will react, explain how you know.

The next day, make observations,

Answer these questions:

What is brown stuff in the CuSO4(aq) and aluminum test tube?

What is the clear liquid in the CuSO4(aq) and aluminum test tube?

What do you think causes the blue color in the CuSO4(aq)?

What gas was produced when sodium and potassium are put in water?

Why does this gas make putting sodium and potassium in water dangerous?

Why was one penny shiny and one brown?

Why didn't the gold ring turn brown?

How did the old and new pennys change after being in the acid overnight?

What was the gas that came out of the penny?

What is missing from the penny now?

What was the limiting reactant? The excess reactant? How can you tell

Which is more reactive, copper or zinc?

Watch this video on the activity series, and rank the metals in it in order of reactivity. Answer the last question on the video.

write equations for these reactions(include states); if there in no reaction, just write formulas for the reactants, and after the arrow place 'nr'. If there is a reaction, identify the limiting reactant & give your reason.
