Young Carers

At Our School

Identifying and supporting young carers at Ystrad Mynach primary school. At YMPS we are aware that some of our pupils are young carers. A young carer is someone under 18 who is caring, unpaid, for a family member, or friend, who is mentally or physically unwell, frail, disabled or who misuses substances. They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Research suggests there are at least 800,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer. This means there could be 6 young carers in a class of 30.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At YMPS, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively.  As the Young Carers’ Leads (Mrs H Thwaite/Mrs A Adey) we have a responsibility for ensuring all young carers are able to enjoy school and make good progress. If you think your child might be a young carer, or could be affected by any of the issues we’ve highlighted, please let me know by filling in the form below and bringing it into school in a sealed envelope addressed to me. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, or have any further questions, please contact us at YstradMynachPrimary@sch.caerphilly.gov.uk marking the message ‘Young Carers’ or speak to us directly on 01443 812707.

Any information that is given to us will be treated sensitively and no information will be shared without your knowledge. Please let us know via the class teacher or through the contact details above, if you require a young carers application form.

 Yours sincerely,

Mrs H Thwaite

SSCE Cymru

SSCE Cymru understands that because one or both of your parents may currently or have previously served in the Armed Forces, you may have faced unique experiences at home and at school.

You may have lived abroad, moved schools and homes during the middle of the year, made new friends, experienced one or both of your parents being away for work, or had to support a friend during one of these experiences. Lots of these experiences can be really exciting and interesting, but they can also be challenging. Every child deals with the emotions they feel during these experiences in different ways.

The purpose of the SSCE Cymru programme is to ensure that teachers and staff in schools in Wales understand what experiences and challenges you may have faced because of the lifestyle of an Armed Forces family. SSCE Cymru provides resources that help schools to support Service children to make sure you have the most positive experiences while attending a school or schools in Wales
