Neolithic Pickaxe

Project Description

As part of the Masters 2017 Experimental Archaeology project, the students were tasked with studying a Neolithic antler pick and designing an experiment to better understand an aspect of design, function or production.

The students recorded a mini documentary which was presented along with their findings. The experiments themselves ranged from replication, techniques of softening and breaking, functionality compared to metal tools and the time taken to make one.

Project Outputs

There are several documentaries below. The students were asked to produce a video aimed at KS2 level education.

Two of the students from the group (Andy Langley & Izzy Wisher) also conducted further research into soaking antler after the module had ended and were able to publish their results here
