Bow & Arrow

Project Description

Among the well-preserved wooden artefacts at Star Carr was a short thin bow. The design and style of the bow was interesting and the team decided to build a replica in order to test the materials and to see the speed and draw-weight.

The bow was replicated twice from willow and shaped using stone tools. While it was effective up to 25 metres, the weight was too light to be considered as a game hunting bow. The alternative explanation is that the bow was used for hunting fish.

Project Outputs

There is a chapter in Star Carr monograph about the bow which can be read for free here.
