Short description:

The ISPOR Presentations Database is a searchable archive of more than 60,000 abstracts of podium and poster presentations from ISPOR (International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research) conferences. The authors investigated the utility of searching the database to inform drug price negotiations for the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), using two sample drugs, apixaban and rivaroxaban. Study results show that the database captures relevant information especially with regard to comparative effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and reported QALYs. Other areas of interest to CMS, such as unmet needs, special populations, risks/harms, patient experience and health equity, were inadequately captured. The authors conclude that searching the database provides grey literature that can aid the decision-making process and potentially reduce publication bias.

Limitations stated by the author(s):

The authors state: “limitations such as potential duplications and preliminary, non-peer-reviewed posters should be considered when leveraging this database.”

Limitations stated by the reviewer(s):

Since the results were published only in abstract/poster form, very limited information was presented on methods, results and conclusions. In addition, only two case studies were reported, making it inadequate to draw informed conclusions. No comparison is provided to results from other standard database sources such as Embase, which indexes ISPOR conference abstracts found in the journal Value in Health. Thus, the study does not report the amount or type of unique information that the ISPOR Presentations database provides, making it difficult to determine if supplemental searching of this database is warranted.
