Co-operative Education

Co-operative Education Department News.....

Congratulations to our co-op students who are off to a wonderful start at their co-op placements. Yes Co-op is alive and well!!!!!

During the first quadmester co-op students are enjoying and learning employability and transferable skills at their placements. Students have taken the opportunity to work in various co-op placements such as technical fields, law, security, medical, hotel management and business.

Under these challenging times our students are experiencing various strict protocols that have been put in place in the private sector. Businesses have been preparing since last spring with regards to using the proper PPE and adhering to COVID-19 protocols. Co-op students are minimizing their contact at school, in fact the majority of time co-op students are going from home to the placement and back home.

In addition, to learning how to stay safe at the workplace during these challenging times students are gaining certifications in WHMIS, CPR and Working at Heights, some of our co-op students have enrolled in Dual Credit courses at various Colleges such as: Criminal Justice and Society, Principles of Psychology, Electronic Lab Instruments and Techniques and Professional Police Standards. Thank you to all the Colleges for adding value to our students’ learning in areas of interest.

In addition, to our 2 and 4 credit co-op we also provide some virtual placements in such areas as business, law and information technology. Regarding our SHSM program students are receiving placements, thus allowing them to fulfill their Health and Wellness SHSM designation. The co-op department is trying to support student success through experiential learning. Learning through co-op allows students to network and add to their e-portfolio for future opportunities.

Lastly, can’t say it enough times - THANK YOU to our community partners for supporting our co-op program and students. We are so grateful during these challenging times.
