Framework for the Social Communication Program
Secondary students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ages 14-21) are served via the YCDSB Social Communication Program. These students are enrolled in their home school and are integrated into the regular classroom, with age appropriate peers. Along with a focus on academics, this individualized program focuses on the development of communication, self-regulation and social skills. Teachers provide ongoing, explicit instruction to ensure that students have the tools and understanding of social norms, cues and expectations that are critical to success in high school and after graduation.
This program is delivered in the context of gospel values and Catholic Graduate Expectations. Implementation of this uniquely designed program is a collaboration between the Special Education Teacher and the Subject Teachers, with additional support, as required. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies are implemented as required and are outlined in the student’s IEP.
Pathways for Students with Autism
