Project Goals:
To use art in raising awareness of Endangered Species in New England;
To learn about artists who work with animals as their subjects, (specifically, Ami Vitale, Tim Christensen, Joel Sartore, Anne London, and Oaxacan Alebrijes from Mexico).
To become acquainted with basic ceramic vocabulary;
To learn about and find inspiration in the highly patterned art (Alebrijes) from Oaxaca, Mexico;
To form and paint a low-relief ceramic tile that contains both imagery of a species of your choice and an indication of the systems around it which promote that species’ survival.
Artists and Art Culture Studied:
Ami Vitale, Tim Christensen, Joel Sartore, Anne London, and Oaxacan Alebrijes from Mexico.
Reflection:
I helped respond to the Essential Question by teaching information about an endangered species through art. my systems are flowers, rocks, leaves, mountains, and waves. I think the strongest pattern is the line of mountains because it shows what is in my opinion the most important and most interesting thing about this animal.
I used a cool color scheme because after being in the habitat where these animals live, I felt like I could capture the calm and crisp feeling of the area the best with cool colors.
I chose the Katahdin Arctic Butterfly because Katahdin is a special part of my life, and I had never heard of a species that lives only there. Because of this, I wanted to learn more about them, and choose them for my tile project.

Essential Question:
How do artists use their art to communicate?
