I learned many new pinching techniques during this project. One of the techniques that I learned was that you need to be slow and have patience when working with your pinch pots or else cracking will occur. To create even sides on a pinch pot, keep four of your fingers on the outside of the pot and one on the inside. Though if you get the sides of your pinch pot too thin it can get super flimsy and the pinch pot begins to fold, which makes it harder to work with. There are many errors that happen when you are first learning how to create pinch-pots, one error that I made was over-pinching. The sides got way too thin and I had to completely restart. If I were teaching pinch techniques I would tell them to work slowly and that their fingers can do a lot. As well as to always double-check that your sides are even and everything is smoothed down, you don’t want any cracks!
Having contrast on your pots is very important for many different reasons. When adding contrast it allows one side of the clay to stand out from the other and draws your eyes to that particular part. It is also way more appealing to look at when there is some sort of contrast. When I was glazing my pots I picked light colors and bright colors for my contrasts. On my pinch-pot with springs, I did completely white on the outside and then picked a fun color for the inside. Because there are sprigs on the outside your eye is drawn to both the inside and outside of the pot. For my other pots, I chose two completely different colors, this makes it so the inside is more interesting and it stands out from the outside.
If I were to make an additional pot I would make it tall and about 4 inches wide at the opening. As well as make sure all the sides are even and smoothed down. For the outside I would add the same sprigs I added on my sprig pinch-pot. For glazes, I would use transparent pearl on the outside and the rim at the top. For the inside, I would pour in moss green and leaf green which is the same combination I used on one of my pinch pots. This way the inside would stand out compared to the outside. I would create my mug like this because I feel as if my other pinch-pots don’t have very even sides and all look fairly the same. The glazes I picked are from my two already existing pots. I love the transparent pearl on one of my pots and I love the moss green and leaf green pour combination on another one of my pots.
