Stoneware, Size (5 ¾ x 3 x 3)
Create a multiple-sided, lidded box / house out of slabs. Combine two ideas from a mind mapping exercise to tie together all parts of the piece.
The two ideas that I combined on my house is the ocean and the stars. All around the sides of my house i created different level waves and each were a different color, representing the oceans all over the world. The waves are carried all around the house, which make the viewer want to turn the house to see the next side, I also created an octopus as the door and the tentacles wrap around the side, above the octopus is a moon (symbolizing the night). Each side of the house has a different ocean theme, octopus, jellyfish, seaweed, and fish. On the roof of my house, I created constellations and used a glaze to create a night sky effect.
The color scheme I used for my house was cool colors (greens, blues, purples, and neutrals). These colors all work very well with my house, because my house is primarily the ocean, and the ocean is different shades of blue. Purples and greens worked great for underwater creatures. For my roof, I used this super cool dark blue with white specks.
To make sure that I had a strong slab construction I worked slowly and made sure that each side was sealed before adding a new one. To seal the sides I smoothed them out with my fingers and tools and added coils to prevent anything I missed. You also need to make sure that your sides are tightly sealed to your base or they could easily fall off, to do this I needed to use coils and smooth down the sides tightly onto the base. When adding the roof I needed to be extra careful that everything was in place so it didn’t fold in or slide off. To do this I added a coil around every seal and smoothed a pressed each one into the seam. This way it would keep the roof in place.
