Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Kerry James Marshall, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
Final Still Life Drawing
There are many different techniques to use while making this drawing, I choose to use cross-hatching, which was influenced by Giorgio Morandi. I drew multiple lines and multiple layers to create dark/shadows in my artwork. To create light I left the area white, and the lines slowly faded away. Doing this helped me create value throughout my drawing.
I see improvement all over but specifically in the accuracy of my shapes. In my pre-instructional drawing, my objects were wonky, and un proportional. Though in my final still-life drawing, the objects are way more proportional and are very neat. I also see improvement in my value, the value that I drew in my pre-instructional doesn’t look accurate and you can’t tell where the shadows and light are. I improved though in my final still life, and the value is much more distinct. During the drawing unit, I learned many things, for example; how to create value, how to mark-make, and how to make objects look very proportional.
