Value Self Portrait

Purpose:

• To determine where values change when light moves over an uneven surface by using a range of values to paint the different values in a realistic, monochromatic self-portrait;

• To effectively communicate an image that looks like you through careful examination of the values and structure of your face. 

1. The key factors that are necessary to paint facial features is value, outlining, and a small painting brush. Since the photos are in black and white, the value is really important because it identifies shadows, contours, and highlights. Outlining facial features before painting is essential, it helps to construct the painting so you can get the right proportion. Another key factor is having a small brush, having a small brush helps paint small details like your eyes.
