Robert Schlaug: Over time memories distort and blur and I think this pixel stretch effect is a clear indicator of that, the longer a memory is held or a story is told the more the truth is distorted and unclear, for example adding little things to stories to tell over the years distort the truth. I want to experiment with this feeling of distorted memories through the pixel stretch effect
Robert Schlaug lives and works near Nueremberg Germany. He has a simple intention for their photography, he wants to raise awareness during times of sensory overload. He creates intriguing compositions that are composed of linear striped gradients of the natural colours in the palette, I want to experiment with this technique as I find it links heavily with my theme and is an intriguing edit I have never experimented with.
Image Analysis:
This image is composed of a woman walking across what appears to be the abyss, this effect is stretched pixels and is used to create some sort of mystery. He has manipulated the formal element of texture, providing this almost distorted look with the stretched pixels. This links to the theme of memory, as time goes on memories are more distorted and blurred. Interestingly the woman in the picture is left un-stretched, which I believe is done intentionally as although memories get hazy, our physical body remains intact. The pathetic fallacy of the greys could symbolise rain which is often associated with memory. I want to take inspiration from this artist and depict this feeling of lost memory by showing areas that appear pixelated and distorted.

Editing Process:
For this edit, I first created a duplicate layer for non-destructive editing, following that I used the single-row marquee tool to select an area right when the water stopped and the bridge started as I wanted to encapsulate all the water with the pixel stretch effect. after this, I pressed ctrl T and held shift as I dragged the distortion to the bottom of the image. To ensure only the water was affected I used a combination of both the rectangular marquee tool and the black paintbrush, this allowed me to rid of any other parts of the image covered in the effect and allowed for only the water to be affected. The reason I have chosen to do this effect with the water as not only are things always distorted in water, they present an element of mystery as to what lays beyond.
