“A Day in the School Life of a Quality Teacher”

There are a lot of responsibilities that come with being a teacher, a quality teacher to be exact. The responsibilities are divided into three and these are the actual teaching, management of teaching, and administrative work. Our research teacher, Ma’am Donna Ann Galotera, I believe is a quality teacher that gets all of these responsibilities done with flexibility and compassion.

In the actual teaching, our resource teacher makes sure that it is learner-centered and that her students are the center of the learning experience, and she acts as the facilitator of the learning process. She also masters the subject matter that she is teaching simply because she knows how to navigate her way to the attention span of the students given that they are still in kindergarten. Our resource teacher also foresees that the learning outcomes will be achieved by the end of each class through the assessments made. The way she deals with the learners is also admirable because she treats everyone fairly.

For her responsibility of managing of learning inside the class, she allows the learners to recite and express their ideas about the lesson at hand. Ma’am Donna also considers the seating arrangements of the class and they are grouped into 4 tables with different students that are classified in each group. She also has variety of instructional materials to support the learners in understanding her lesson. She also tries to provide learning for students within the period of time given to her by following the blocks of time.

Lastly, our resource teacher also manages her time for her to do administrative work and is where she keeps the attendance of the class every day. This also includes keeping a record of the assessments that she gives. Ma’am Donna balances her time well because she still has time to do other things such as submitting documents and reports to the higher ups without being disrupted by her other works. I have also observed that the principal often looks for her when there is in need of her help.

1. Based on your answers in Analyzing DepEd’s Philosophy in Education and Articulating My personal Philosophy in Teaching, which philosophies of education are dominant in Philippine basic schools? Why do you day so?

The philosophies that are dominant in the school here in the Philippines are essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, existentialism, and behaviorism. Essentialism because schools teach mastery of the basics, curriculum is prescribed; subject atter-centered there are universal, objective values, inculcate values; subject. Perennialism can also be one because schools also teach universal values to students. Progressivism is also present because schools here are mostly child-centered or learner-centered. Existentialism can also be considered because teachers teach learners that they have a choice on their own to make a decision and never just follow the crowd since they have their own individuality, and they exist for a purpose. Lastly, behaviorism can also be one of the philosophies that are present because behaviour is shaped deliberately by forces in the environment and that the type or person and actions desired can be the product of design.

2. If there is one philosophy that schools and teachers should give more attention, what should that be and why?

Perennialism is one of the philosophies that should be given more attention to because it is what is important when children grow up to be their own individuals. A lot of them can be as intelligent as they can be but the values that they will learn and adapt is very important as they learn more things.

The challenges that that awaits me as a future educator will be a lot since I am going to deal with children, it is different from the usual and the problem of adaptability and flexibility of the tasks will surface. I will manage learning in my future classroom by utilizing all of the materials that I have and use it to aid my teaching and learning process will be engaging for the learners. I will prepare myself to respond to 21^st teaching-learning and become glocal teacher by knowing what are the basics and what are the new strategies that I can inculcate in my classroom knowing that we are more technologically inclined and there are variety of ways in which I can make use of.

My Philosophy in Teaching

“One book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world.”

Teaching is one of the most fulfilling professions today. Deciding on becoming a teacher takes a lot of courage and determination because once you have decided, you must fully commit yourself to the process. Overseeing yourself in the process on becoming a teacher really helps to build up that sense of leadership and responsibility in you because as a teacher, you are about to make a change.

Being a teacher doesn’t always mean that the only thing you do is teach students the lessons that they need to know in class. Teaching can also be imparting values and life lessons to students for them to live by those values and learn practicality from the life lessons. Teaching can also mean being aware of your words and actions because as teachers, we should always bear in mind that our students will emulate us in any action that they wish to may it be good or bad. Establishing utmost dignity and good image as a person can also help in the teaching field because as a teacher, you should set your mind that you are making a change and contributing to the betterment of the society.

Teaching is not only limited inside the four walls of the classroom; it also goes out to the community. A teacher also has responsibilities to maintain an environment that is conducive for learning and growth of the students. Rendering services for the improvement of the community are one of the duties of the teachers and by doing this, one can reflect and strive to become a more effective teacher. It is also important that teachers can establish good relationships within the people in the community to ensure that teaching is the noblest profession because it is not only restricted inside the school, but it can also be applicable to the community.

Some say that teaching is not really that hard because once you’ve already mastered your lessons, it will become boring. I beg to disagree from that opinion because I believe that teaching is more than that. Instilling to the students' different kinds of values, being a second mother to the students and a leader to a community will never be easy but we teachers don’t mind being tired, as long as we did our duty to the people and our country, we are relieved.

My commitment to teaching is that I will keep the fire burning as I get closer to my goal and that is to become an effective early childhood educator. Teaching preschoolers is a more challenging path than teaching adults because in the early childhood field, patience, determination and passion is really the key. If one desires to be a preschool teacher and doesn’t have these qualities to begin with, then one may have a hard time dealing with children.

I also commit myself to do my best in everything that needs to be done in order to suffice the quality of teaching and imparting knowledge to a child. Even if there are days wherein it is almost tiring to wake up and get ready for class, I will always remember that I am fuel of change and the future of my pupils lie in my hands. They need me and I also need them to go on with life and fulfill my purpose in life and that is to touch lives. I believe that I was not given this opportunity by chance to study in a prestigious school that is known for teacher quality education, instead, He guided me here because I have a purpose to fulfill.
