Health and Fitness

All students at Woodland High School are required to take four (4) semesters of health and fitness education. Health can be a one semester course or it is embedded in medical science or early childhood education. 

The physical education department believes that physical fitness is the major focus and goal of our program.  

A portion of each class period will be spent working to gain knowledge of and improve upon the five health-related components of fitness: 

All activity classes will continue to build on this information in an effort to improve fitness, reduce stress and develop recreational skills. A basic understanding of safety, rules and history of various activities will be required for all physical education classes.  Weight equipment may be moved to accommodate students with disabilities.

Total Body Fitness

.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 10-12


This course incorporates a wide range of activities that students can use throughout their lives.  The focus is to incorporate the F.I.T.T. Principle and the Five Components of Fitness(muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) into a daily routine which improves the overall fitness of the student.  This class is geared for all fitness levels.  This class format is a fresh fusion of all forms of fitness activities, whether you are a beginner or a skilled athlete, this class will provide a safe and effective training environment for all fitness levels.  The weekly schedule will include the use of spin bikes, weight room, walking, flexibility exercises, core workout or cardio workout one to two days a week, as well have the option of being involved in sports activities that promote competition and good sportsmanship as well as fitness.  Individual assessments will be taken to meet state required Curriculum Based Assessment(CBA) of physical education standards.

Fitness 9

0.5 credit - Grade 9


An activity orientated class stressing basic fundamentals of conditioning and physical fitness.  Instruction includes team sports, recreational and lifetime activities.  Students will learn the F.I.T.T. Principle and the Five Components of Fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) and how they are implemented into a daily routine.  Students will be involved in the weight room two days a week, a cardio workout and/or core workout one day a week and be involved in sports activities that promote competition and good sportsmanship as well as fitness.  Students will learn how to work together in a team and learn the values of working in a team setting which will carry over to real life situations. Individual assessments will be taken to meet state required Curriculum Based Assessment(CBA) of physical education standards

Health

0.5 credit - Grade 9 (required for graduation)

The intent of this health class is to help students make independent informed decisions concerning their physical, mental, and social well-being. Current health issues involving tobacco, alcohol, drug abuse, heart disease, eating disorders, stress management, teen pregnancy, HIV and other infectious diseases will be covered. Students will complete at least one state required Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) and a Freshman Presentation over a health topic of their choice. Students will learn the basics of a speech outline and complete a presentation that will be 4 minutes in length.  Successful completion of Early Childhood Education can count as .5 Health and .5 CTE credit.

Athletic Performance 

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 10-12


Students will be introduced to a strength base core lifting program where the fundamentals of technique, safety and goal setting are taught.  Whether you are a beginner or have a background of weight lifting, this class will be able to help you make gains and increase self confidence through a periodization system of various phases or cycles of sets-reps-percentages and training intensity of certain core lifting exercises, as well as a program to maintain strength.  The class will be in the weight room three days a week, utilizing a cardio workout one day a week and one day for core workout or an activity.  The 6 Beavers Absolutes, F.I.T.T. Principle and the Five Components of Fitness will be the focus when incorporating routines along with the H.I.I.T. Principle.  6 week cycle assessments of four core lifts(bench, squat, incline bench and cleans) will be taken to measure growth and to re-evaluate goal setting.   Students may also be able to qualify for the 1000lb Club as well.  Individual assessments also will be taken to meet state required Curriculum Based Assessment(CBA) of physical education standards.

PE Waiver

No credit - Grade 12 

Students who participate in a Woodland High School extra-curricular athletic program, have a health need, physical disability, or religious exemption may qualify for a physical education waiver. In order to obtain the PE Waiver, you will need to fill out an application. You will also not be able to be a Teacher or Office Assistant, have an open period in your schedule, or have failed a previous high school physical education class.  Pick up an application from your School Counselor.

Unified PE 

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 10-12


Unified Physical Education provides a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities, using the power of Special Olympics. The Unified Physical Education course is structured around the national physical education standards and grade-level outcomes. Additionally, the class supports the development of leadership skills for all students as well as the empowerment of ALL students to foster an inclusive class and school-wide environment. Students in Unified Physical Education courses may have the opportunity to participate in competitions with other schools or attend Special Olympics events.
