All students at Woodland High School are required to take four (4) semesters of health and fitness education.
The physical education department believes that physical fitness is the major focus and goal of our program.
A portion of each class period will be spent working to gain knowledge of and improve upon the five health-related components of fitness:
Cardiovascular endurance
Body Composition
Flexibility
Muscular endurance
Muscular strength
All activity classes will continue to build on this information in an effort to improve fitness, reduce stress and develop recreational skills. A basic understanding of safety, rules and history of various activities will be required for all physical education classes. Weight equipment may be moved to accommodate students with disabilities.
An activity oriented class stressing basic fundamentals of conditioning and physical fitness. Instruction will include team sports, recreational sports, and lifetime activities. Examples of units offered include, but are not limited to: volleyball, basketball, ultimate frisbee, badminton, pickleball, and yard games. Students will learn and practice the components of fitness: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. This class is aimed to offer students the opportunity to learn various sports and individual activities so one can be exposed to a variety of options and practice the healthy lifestyle of fitness for a lifetime. This PE course would be a good choice for 9th graders who enjoy participating in a competitive setting.
This course is designed for those who would like to workout, but in a more recreational and low impact setting. Students will take frequent walks around Woodland High School campus. On inclement weather days, workouts indoors will consist primarily of stationary bikes, or circuit training in the weight room. Whether you are a beginner or a skilled athlete, this class will provide a safe and effective training environment for all fitness levels. This class will enhance your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Heart rate zones will be explored, along with regular flexibility practice, nutritional choice education, and stress reduction practices. The goal of this course is to explore low impact exercise activities that can be practiced for a lifetime. Individual assessments will be taken, as well as a series of self-tests to monitor student progress.
The intent of this health class is to help students make independent informed decisions concerning their physical, mental, and social well-being. Current health issues involving tobacco, alcohol, drug abuse, heart disease, eating disorders, stress management, teen pregnancy, HIV and other infectious diseases will be covered. Students will complete at least one state required Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) and a Freshman Presentation over a health topic of their choice. Students will learn the basics of a speech outline and complete a presentation that will be 4 minutes in length.
A core lifting program used in Athletic Strength and Conditioning classes, this class is directed toward fitness and athletic performance. Students will lift in the weight room four days a week and participate in cardiovascular workouts and games outside the weight room on their non lifting day. All lifting workouts will be recorded, and kept for individual goal setting and progress monitoring. Individual assessments will be performed throughout the semester by each student. Content related to training principles, skill related components of fitness, as well as sport specific training regimens will be implemented to correspond with goals set out by the student athlete .
Students who participate in a Woodland High School extra-curricular athletic program, have a health need, physical disability, or religious exemption may qualify for a physical education waiver. In order to obtain the PE Waiver, you will need to fill out an application. You will also not be able to be a Teacher or Office Assistant, have an open period in your schedule, or have failed a previous high school physical education class. Pick up an application from your School Counselor.
