Studio Art

Note: All Art Courses fulfill the Fine Arts requirement

Ceramics

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Requirements: $25 Materials Fee 

Students will explore the world of ceramic art while gaining knowledge on various hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Students will create both functional pottery and artistic sculptural projects during this semester class. Emphasis will be placed on developing both aesthetic and criticism skills while viewing both work from your peers and from master artists from around the world.

Art 1 - Beginning Drawing

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Students will create drawings utilizing processes such as sketching, rendering, contour, gesture, and perspective drawing using a variety of drawing tools.  Additionally, students reflect upon the outcome of these experiences, explore historical connections, write about the process, make presentations about their progress at regular intervals, and explore post-secondary and career options related to drawing.  Art museums, galleries, studios and community resources are utilized.

Art 2 - Beginning Painting

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite:  Art 1-Beginning Drawing, with a final semester grade of “C-” or higher. 
Fee: $10 Materials Fee

This course will be run alternating years with Art 3-Studio Art/Drawing Portfolio. This course will be offered in the 2023-24 school year.

Curriculum includes the study of acrylic and watercolor painting techniques. Additionally, students reflect upon the outcome of these experiences, explore historical connections, write about the process, make presentations about their progress at regular intervals, and explore post-secondary and career options related to painting. Art museums, galleries, studios and community resources are utilized.

Art 3 - Studio Art/Drawing Portfolio

1.0 credit - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Passed both Art 1 (Beginning Drawing) and Art 2 (Beginning Painting) with a C- or better. 
Fee: $20

This course will run in alternating years with Art 2-Beg. Painting. It will be offered in the 2024-25 school year.

Possible college credit option through LCC CHS program.

Studio Art is designed for students who are seriously interested in further exploring the experience of art. The Drawing Portfolio is intended to address a very broad interpretation of drawing issues and media. Line quality, light and shade, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, the illusion of depth and mark-making are drawing issues that can be addressed through a variety of means, which could include painting, printmaking, mixed media, etc. This is a one-year course. This class has a college credit option through LCC.

Media Arts

1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

Requirements: $20 Materials Fee and a Digital Camera (preferably one that has the ability to be adjusted manually). If you do not have access to a digital camera, cameras can be checked out from school.

Students explore basic digital photography through a variety of assignments that focus on the technical and compositional elements of photography. Students will gain expertise in shooting, editing and the presentation of photographs. Students will become accustomed to both Photoshop and other photo editing software. Each student will be encouraged to generate imaginative and creative ideas and develop skills that reveal a solid foundation in photography.

Floral Design 1

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Fee: $10

This class can count as an Art credit or Occupational credit.

In this introductory class students will explore the concepts of art through retail floriculture. Students will design and create floral products such as corsages, boutonnieres, and holiday products. Students will gain knowledge and skills in flower identification and classification, care and handling, and the procedures and tools used in the retail industry. The course also includes information on sales and service, career opportunities, leadership activities, computer skills and record keeping practices.

Floral Design 2

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Floral Design 1
Fee: $10

This class can count as an Art credit or Occupational credit.

Students will expand their art and floral design knowledge.  Students will be responsible for researching current industry trends, designing, and constructing weekly arrangements.  Students will create a portfolio of work that demonstrate entry level skills that can be used for potential employment opportunities. Class emphasis is placed on hands-on and professional skills including special event planning and specialty arrangements (wedding design, funerary, etc.).  Leadership activities, sales and service aspects, and opportunities to work in the school Floral Shop are available.

Floral Shop Management 1

.5 credit - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Floral Design 2 
Fee: $10

Students are responsible for the operation and management of the WHS Floral Shop.  Emphasized skills include: customer service, taking and completing orders, money-handling, wholesale and retail cost evaluation, marketing and social media, advanced design, inventory, care and handling of flowers, and shop maintenance.  Real-world job placement is emphasized, therefore, reliability, work ethic, self-discipline, leadership, and teamwork are expected.

Floral Shop Management 2

0.5 credit - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Floral Shop Management 1 
Fee: $10

Floral Management 2 students will continue their responsibilities in the operation and management of the WHS Floral Shop as well as act as mentors in guiding and modeling proper professional and design skills to Floral 1 and 2 students. Students take an active leadership role in the school Floral Shop practicing and reinforcing customer service, industry, and design skills. Participation in available work-site learning opportunities is encouraged.  Students will complete Floral Shop Management 2 with a professional-level Portfolio of Work. 

Performing Arts

Advanced Drama

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beg. Drama for grades 10-11. No prerequisite for seniors.  

Currently not approved by NCAA. 

Advanced Drama is a course designed for students with a serious interest in dramatic arts, dramatic literature, and play writing. In this course students will use writing workshop methods and their   understanding of dramatic elements to complete a 10-page script.  They will study the plays of two American playwrights and one play by Shakespeare, completing oral and written responses as assigned.  They will develop acting, oral presentation, and collaboration skills with a monologue and dramatic ensemble work. Participation in a performance for a live audience is a class requirement.  Students taking this course with disabilities will be accommodated to access the stage during school performances. Seniors may take this class to satisfy .5 Senior English credit or .5 fine arts credit.

Beginning Drama/Theater

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Students may repeat Beginning Drama with the permission of the teacher.

This course is an introduction to the craft and theory of drama and performance.  Students will learn basic skills in voice, movement, and acting. They will read and analyze classic and contemporary plays/scenes, participate in theater games, and deliver monologues. Students will work with classmates to create and perform dramatic works for a live audience.  Students with disabilities taking this course will be accommodated to access the stage during school performances.

Vocal Music

Concert Choir

0.5 credit or 1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

This class is designed for any and all vocalists. All singers are welcome, as well as those wanting to learn to sing. Basics of vocal production, ear training, and performing with a group are the focus of the class. Basic sight reading and music theory are also covered. Students taking this course with disabilities will be accommodated to access the stage during school performances.

Jazz Choir

1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Limited enrollment, by audition only. Underclassmen (9-10) are required to be simultaneously enrolled in Concert Choir, This class meets during zero period. Students must provide their own transportation.

Fee: $25

Jazz Choir is an auditioned, mixed ensemble that focuses on jazz and swing style literature from various selected eras of musical history.  The primary focus of this class is on performance. Students will be required to attend all performances scheduled by the director including after school. Committing to the group is committing to making the performances a priority! Performance attire is required. Auditions will be held near the end of the school year, generally after the final choral concert. Students taking this course with disabilities will be accommodated to access the stage during school performances.

Instrumental Music

Beaver Band

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Previous experience performing and reading musical and rhythmic notation. See director for more details.

This class is open to students with an instrumental background and focuses on the development of instrumental music skills, musical performance, and comprehension of music theory. The class will include rehearsal and performance of music within various genres contained in both Classical and Modern forms. Students with disabilities or modified education will be accommodated accordingly to allow participation in this class. Our Beaver Band performs in quarterly concerts as well as our local Planters Day Parade. A second, optional parade performance allows for another fun opportunity for students. Students enrolled in the class also have the ability to apply/ audition for honor band activities. Students with disabilities or modified education will be accommodated accordingly to allow participation in this class.   

Beginning Guitar

1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

This class focuses on basic guitar techniques (reading music, single melody lines, power chords, open chords, bar chords, scales, pick control and finger picking). Content also includes sight reading, note writing, and in class performance. Students with disabilities taking this course will be accommodated to access the stage during school performances.

Jazz Ensemble

1.0 credit - Grades 7-12

Prerequisite: Limited enrollment. Auditions will take place in early June of the previous academic year. Students enrolled in this class will be expected to commit to the ensemble for a full year. Students provide their own transportation.  This is a zero period class.  

This is a zero period class that meets from 7:30-8:20 a.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8:30-9:30 on Mondays. This course focuses on a variety of jazz styles and may include Swing, Dixieland, Funk, Latin, and Fusion. There is an emphasis on theory as it relates to jazz and improvisation and includes various opportunities for performance, including performance at competitive jazz festivals and optional honor band opportunities. 

Rock and Roll/ Percussion

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

Students participating in percussion ensemble will learn to read rhythmic and musical notation, which will enable them to perform on various mallet and percussion instruments with precision.  We will incorporate techniques for marching percussion, drum set, classical percussion, and unconventional/ ”found” percussion in order to provide a deep and varied education within this area of performance.
