Elective Courses

World Language

Successful completion of two (2.0) credits of the same world language is an admission requirement for most 4-year colleges or universities.

American Sign Language 1

1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

This introductory class will introduce students to American Sign Language (ASL).  Emphasis will be on expressive and receptive skills, vocabulary building and understanding basic ASL grammar.  Students will gain an appreciation for ASL as a legitimate language through the study of the history of ASL, and the Deaf Culture.  Students should be prepared to spend part of their classroom time in silence to receive instruction primarily through a visual/gestural mode.  Students will also be expected to use ASL in the classroom and in presentations. 

American Sign Language 2

1.0 credit - Grades 10-12

Prerequisites: ASL 1 with a grade of “C” or better.

The student will improve fluency in finger spelling, signing skills, expressive skills, and broaden knowledge of the Deaf experience.  Students will explore the role of sign language interpreters.  Students should be prepared to spend part of their classroom time in silence to receive instruction primarily through a visual/gestural mode.  Students will be expected to use ASL in the classroom and in presentations.   

Spanish 1

1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

This first year is an introduction to the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in Spanish with exposure to the varied cultures of Spanish speaking countries. Emphasis will be on interpersonal communication, vocabulary building and understanding basic Spanish grammar. Students will be expected to use Spanish in the classroom for the purpose of  exchanging social courtesies, expressing needs, relating interests, and discussing school and family life. 

Spanish 2

1.0 credit - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Spanish 1 with a grade of C or better.

Second year Spanish expands upon previously learned vocabulary and grammatical structures using the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Emphasis will be on interpersonal communication while developing interpretive and presentational communication. Students will be expected to use Spanish in the classroom for the purpose of describing daily routines, comparing and contrasting the varied cuisines and celebrations of Spanish speaking countries with their own culture and preparing a cumulative portfolio of summative projects. 

Basic Electives

Psychology

0.5 credit - Grades 9-12

This class introduces students to the pioneers of psychology. Both founding members and contemporary contributors will be examined. The major "schools of thought" will be explored and the influential people who work, research and teach using those philosophies. Instructional techniques and materials will include textbook, current trade magazines, extensive student discussion groups, and film analysis.  This is an elective course.

Dismissal

No credit - Grade 12

Late Arrival 1st period, Early Out 6th period, or dismissal any period in between is an option for those seniors who have 19.0 credits at the end of junior year and are on track to graduate. Students that have Dismissal period 2,3,4 or 5 will not be allowed to leave campus.

Leadership

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 9-12

This course is designed primarily for club and class officers, although other students are welcome. The class focuses on communication skills, group processes, managerial skills, self-awareness, and human relation skills. Students help in providing services for school, community and other programs. Class members are also expected to become positive role models at Woodland High School.

Teacher Aide

0.5 or 1.0 credit - Grades 11-12

Teacher approval required.

Teacher aides are permitted only under specific regulations.  There are no off-campus aide positions.  Excellent attendance is a must.  Students will only be allowed to take 1 aide credit towards graduation requirements.
