English 9

This is a beginning high school English class that focuses on reading strategies, communication skills, grammar, vocabulary, writing skills, and literature analysis. Literary focus is on the Hero’s Journey and overcoming adversity.

English 10

1.0 credit

Prerequisite: English 9 or Completion of English 9 Benchmark


This is an extension of the English 9 course concentrating on reading strategies, communication skills, grammar, vocabulary, writing skills, and literature analysis. The literary texts focus on justice/fairness and utopian/dystopian themes.

AP Seminar

1.0 Credit

Prerequisite: English 9 (Available to 10th-12th graders, recommended 10th grade)


Develop and practice the skills in research, critical thinking, using evidence to develop and support a point of view, collaboration, and communication. You’ll investigate topics in a variety of subject areas, write research-based essays, and design and give presentations both individually and as part of a team. The AP Seminar assessment has three parts: two performance tasks and the end-of-course AP Exam.

English 11

Prerequisite: English 10 or AP Seminar


This is a continuation of English 9-10 courses concentrating on reading strategies, communication skills, grammar, vocabulary, writing skills, and literature analysis. The literary texts focus on American literature.

AP Language & Composition

1.0 credit

Prerequisite: English 10 or AP Seminar


This course follows the curricular requirements outlined by the College Board for the AP Language and Composition Course. It focuses on building skills necessary for college-level reading and writing. This includes extensive reading, rhetorical analysis, writing and discussion; with an emphasis placed on the expository, analytical, and argumentative writing forms.  Students will learn close-reading and critical thinking skills, analyze how writers communicate effectively and apply these skills to their own writing. The course moves at a rapid pace and will center on non-fiction works by American writers. Students will take the AP Exam in May to qualify for college credit.

English 12

Prerequisite: English 11 or AP LANG


This is a continuation of English 9-11 courses concentrating on reading strategies, communication skills, grammar, vocabulary, writing skills, and literature analysis. Literary focus is on a selection of various genres and mediums.

AP Literature

1.0 credit

Prerequisite: English 11 or AP LANG


This course follows the curricular requirements outlined by the College Board for the AP Literature and Composition Course. This is a college-level course where students focus on analyzing and responding to texts. This includes extensive reading, literary analysis, writing, and discussion; with an emphasis placed on fiction, poetry, and dramas from a variety of genres and time periods. The texts used are challenging and mature and include sometimes controversial and mature material. Great emphasis is placed on the construction of style analysis for poetry and fiction. Students will become familiar with several modes of writing. As well as critical theory and philosophy. Students will take the AP Exam in May to qualify for college credit.

Creative Writing

1.0 credit

Prerequisite: English 11 or AP LANG


Students will read and write in various forms of creative written work, including memoirs, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and plays. The class will use writing workshop methods, which means that sharing draft work in groups will be a regular feature of the writing process.

ML English 

1.0 Credit

Prerequisite: ML student


This is a foundational English class that focuses on reading strategies, communication skills, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills for multiple Language Learners.
