Headaches

Headaches are a common complaint amongst High School Students. There are lots of reasons for this:

  • Dehydration

  • Not eating well.

  • Staying up too late.

  • Too much screen time.

  • Vision testing not up to date (ex: need glasses or prescription needs updating).

  • Medication side effects.

  • Injuries.

  • STRESS!

So what can we do to try and combat these headaches??

  • Bring a water bottle and drink more water!

  • Make sure you are eating well and enough! Fuel the tank!

  • Set a schedule so that you are getting enough sleep!

  • PUT THE PHONE DOWN AT NIGHT - I cannot stress this enough. Once you start down that wormhole (and we're all guilty of it!), before you know it, it's 2am and you have class at 8!

  • Make sure you have your eyes checked annually to see if you need glasses. And if you have glasses, this visit will make sure that your prescription is up to date. We are planning on getting the Lions Club in to do our annual vision screening with all our students. If a student's vision requires a referral to a vision care specialist, we can help you get that referral.

  • Lots of medications can actually cause headaches. If headaches are a side effect of something you are taking for another condition, please speak to your provider about options to treat this.

  • Concussions and other injuries can cause headaches. This is something that needs to be closely monitored and treated by your provider to ensure that there isn't another more serious issue going on.

  • REDUCE YOUR STRESS! (Easier said than done!). Make sure you're exercising regularly, spending time outside, participating in hobbies that make you happy, and removing yourself from toxic situations and relationships that could be causing the stress. Socia media can be a strong influence on young adults and can cause a significant amount of unnecessary stress - keep that in mind. Please use technology and social media responsibly.

Obviously, for those pesky headaches that we all occasionally get, there are over the counter medications available in the health office to those students who have their health forms completed and on file.
