Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) at WM
WHAT IS DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a skills-based therapy that helps people navigate intense emotions and feel more in control of their reactions. It’s often used for individuals who feel things deeply, have trouble managing stress, or find themselves stuck in patterns that don’t feel good but are hard to change.
DBT teaches concrete tools that can be applied in real time, especially in moments when emotions feel overwhelming. This includes skills for staying grounded, getting through difficult situations without making them worse, understanding emotional patterns, and communicating more effectively with others.
At its core, DBT is about helping people build a life that feels more stable, manageable, and aligned with what they actually want, rather than feeling constantly pulled around by their emotions.
DBT was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), and it remains one of the most effective treatments for it. At the same time, the skills it teaches are broadly useful, which means DBT can benefit anyone who wants better tools for managing emotions, handling stress, and improving relationships.
WHAT IS DBT THERAPY LIKE AT WISE MIND?
One of the core components of DBT treatment is the combination of individual therapy, skills groups, and between session coaching support. At Wise Mind, we incorporate these aspects of the DBT model in a way that feels flexible and individualized while still giving clients opportunities to practice skills, receive support, and apply what they are learning in real-life situations throughout the week.
In individual therapy, DBT is used in a way that feels practical, collaborative, and personalized rather than overly structured or workbook-heavy. DBT skills are introduced based on real situations happening in day-to-day life so they feel relevant and usable outside of therapy. Sessions focus on understanding what is happening in your life right now, recognizing emotional and relationship patterns, and helping you better understand the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that keep showing up.
In group therapy, DBT is applied through a combination of discussion, support, psychoeducation, and practical skills work. Groups focus on helping clients better understand and manage emotions, relationships, stressors, and behavioral patterns while learning healthier ways to respond in everyday life.
WHAT IS DBT TEXT COACHING?
At Wise Mind, we believe support shouldn’t be limited to just your scheduled session, especially since difficult moments don’t always happen on a schedule. DBT text coaching allows you to reach out between sessions when you need support in real time.
You can use text coaching to get help applying skills in the moment, talk through something that feels overwhelming, or make note of something you want to come back to in your next session. Therapists respond in a reasonable but timely manner, with the goal of helping you feel more supported and regulated when it matters most.
