This Junior Achievement exploratory class is designed to introduce you to the world of money management. During this class we look at the following topics.... Careers, Expenses, Savings, Entrepreneurship, Investing, Social Security, Taxes, Renting vs Owning, Leasing vs Buying, just to name a few. I will be sending you in your email a virtual copy of the Junior Achievement Finance Park Workbook pages you will need to complete your activity. The workbook will be emailed to your student for class access.

Lesson topic: Renting Vs Owning

Learning target: I will have a solid understanding of the difference between renting vs owning. I will also be able to explain what information to consider when deciding what type of residence to live in .

After completing this lesson, you will have a better understanding of what type of housing options are available for you in different living situations. You will also have the opportunity to complete a sample lease agreement that is used when renting. Please keep in mind that when you rent/lease, you are living in "another" persons rental.

Have you ever given any thought about where you will live after you graduate from high school college? Today we will take a look at the options of Renting an apartment/house vs. buying a home. Attached you will find the the reading material form your workbook, and an image of a rental or home lease/worksheet from your JA workbooks for you to use as a reference guide. Please read pgs 62 & 63 of your workbook.

Then research local rentals, both apartments and homes to see what they cost is to rent the establishment to live in.

See if you can find a copy of their actual rental agreement for the apartment & home (if it is a rental home) to read through. Pay attention to the restrictions that they state on the rental agreement. Send me a summary of: 1: what you found 2. If you would rent or lease the home/apartment....and why? 3. What were the restrictions/requirement you have to abide by to live in that home/apartment. 4. What would be the repercussions if you caused damage to the home/apartment

Lesson Topic - I will be able to identify my career interest, my strengths, natural talents, and what my values. This will aid me in determining what type of job would best me abilities and interests.

Target: Students will take 2 different personality tests to identify their their type of personality, as well as determine what type of job fits into that personality.

Lesson Topic: Career Research and abilities

Learning Target: Students will be able to identify a career that they would like to explore.

Assignment: Students will research 3 careers that fit the results of their surveys and test. They will write a brief summary of their findings and why they have an interest this job.

Lesson Topic: Payroll and taxes

Learning Target: Students will be able to explain the 3 types of taxes that people have to pay, why the taxes are necessary, and what is that money used for. (Property, Sales and Income tax)

*** October 8 & 9 Lesson Topic: How to read a paycheck stub, deductions and how tax deductions are figured.

Learning Target: I will be able to read and understand the different parts of a paystub. I will be able to understand the different types of taxes that are deducted from my check; why they are deducted and how is that money used.

***October 12 - Career : Being and Entrepreneur: pgs 19-21 workbook

Lesson Topic: Students will explore who an Entrepreneur is. They will research different famous entrepreneurs.

Learning Target: Students will learn through research the how the process of starting your own business occurred for well know entrepreneurs. Students will be able to identify the basic steps needed to become a young entrepreneur.

Lesson Topic: What an entrepreneurial business look likes ; and how ti functions.

Learning Target: Students will be able to look at the cost of starting a business through an extension activity: Starting a Lawn Care Business. They will evaluate: revenue, variable costs, fixed costs and potential profit.

(Lesson Topic: What is a STEM career and what makes it different form any other career

Learning Target: Students will understand what STEM means and why types of careers fall under that category. If possible: National Guard will provide Stem simulation for students during class.

****October 14- Social Security and Medicare: : What are these deductions from my paycheck.

Lesson Topic: What is Social Security and Medicare. Why do we have that deducted from our pay checks.

Learning Target: Students will have a better understanding of theses 2 deductions, why it is removed and when do they benefit from that deduction,

****October 15 - Sales Tax Overview

Learning Target: What is Sales tax? Why do I have to pay this when I purchase a product?

Lesson topic: Students will learn: What sales tax is. Who pays it. Uses of the tax. What are taxable and non-taxable items. Why are some not taxed? What is the difference?

****October 15: How do I read a Sales Receipt?

Lesson Topic: What all is included on a sales receipt.

Learning Target: Students will learn how to read a sales receipt. Learn how to calculate tax, and what to do if you have a problem with or need to return an item.

***October 16: Saving, investing, and risk management.

Lesson topic; Why should you save? What is the benefit of saving. What options to I have if I want to save money?

Learning Target: Students will learn terms related to saving, basic ways to save and to invest money to make it grow.

Lesson topic: Student will learn about different investing options, risk/rewards of each option. What is a safe investment vs what is a risky investment.
