McKinney-Vento
Education for Homeless Children & Youth
The McKinney-Vento (MV) Homeless Assistance Act ensures the educational rights and protections of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Wilson County Schools (WCS) is committed to ensuring that all students (pre-K through 12th grade) have equal access to a free, appropriate public education, regardless of their housing situation.
Under the McKinney-Vento Act, students experiencing homelessness have the right to:
Immediate enrollment in school, even without the typically required paperwork (e.g., proof of residency, immunization records).
Attend their school of origin (if requested by the parent/guardian and feasible) or enroll in the school where they are currently residing.
Receive transportation to their school of origin (if requested and feasible).
Access the same services as housed students, including transportation and supplemental educational programs.
Learn in an inclusive setting, free from segregation or discrimination based on their housing status.
WCS Policy: 4125 Homeless Students
Dispute resolution: If there is a disagreement about a student's eligibility under the McKinney-Vento Act, a formal dispute resolution process is available. In such cases, the school is required to refer the student, parent, or guardian to the WCS McKinney-Vento Liaison, who will guide them through the process as quickly and respectfully as possible.
During the dispute process, the student has the right to remain enrolled and attend classes while the issue is being resolved.
