Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
This week has seen us through a full five days of our timetable and the Year 2 classrooms have been hives of activity!
In Phonics this week, Tricky Witch was up to her old tricks again and the children learnt that ‘dge’ and ‘g’ both sound like ‘j’ in words like ‘bridge’ and ‘carriage’. In Maths, we focused on place value. We started with the value of numerals in 2-digit numbers, moved on to recognising and writing numerals in words, and ended the week solving place value problems. In English, we read the text ‘Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish’ by Michael Foreman. This week, the children worked in pairs to place the story illustrations in the correct sequence of events. Each child then chose one of the setting illustrations to recreate, using watercolour paints. As a class, they then looked at the finished paintings, came up with adjectives to describe the settings, and ended the week writing a short setting description paragraph.
In Science, we began our topic ‘Taking Care’ with a look at ‘A Day in the Life of Blobble’, an alien who commits a series of blunders during his day, concerning keeping healthy. We discussed what he could have done differently to be healthier and the children then designed a healthy lunch box. In History, we began our Tudors topic by looking at the rise of the Tudors and explored the events and aftermath of the Battle of Bosworth. The pupils drew the emblem of each house (York and Lancaster) and recorded the key information they had learnt. As part of our creative topic work, the children have started work on a collage Tudor Rose. In Geography, we continued our ‘Around the World’ topic, with locating Australia on a world map and identifying some of its features and characteristics.
We hope you have a lovely weekend!
