Day 13 - take action

Now it's your turn...you are already making a difference by picking up rubbish each a day. Now you can take action another way - share your dream and action idea for the future of your area.

FIRST watch this video - YOUNG OCEAN EXPLORERS - 'Why is plastic so bad for sea creatures?'

NEXT complete the challenge.

THEN work together on the activities below.

DAY 13 CHALLENGE / WERO

Go outside and see if you can find one piece of plastic rubbish each. Count the pieces of rubbish your class found, and ask your teacher to upload your tally to the Young Ocean Explorers website. Don't forget to put the rubbish in the bin.

WE NEED TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENT:

  • THINK - PMI - PLUS / MINUS / INTERESTING about the ocean, lake, river near you. It’s time to think about all the things we have learnt over the past 12 days. As a class or in groups write one thing you learnt about on a piece of paper (suggest A5 or A6 size and write it as big as you can, eg: Birds can get caught on fish hooks; rivers are connected to the ocean). You can print and cut out these ideas if you want. Now take turns to place each statement under a heading on the floor - is it a PLUS (positive); MINUS (negative) or is it and INTERESTING fact? This is a good time to discuss and respectfully debate. Or make your own PMI chart individually. Here is a PMI chart to print, or you can draw your own.

  • WRITE - Write a list of 5 or more things you think would improve life around and in your local moana / awa / roto. You can work by yourself or with a group. Create a class list using everyone's ideas. You might like to use padlet for an online brainstorm.

  • DRAW what your area is like now. Make sure you include your local waterway (river/awa, lake/roto, sea/moana). Draw and label the good things and the not so good things about the environment. Think about what you would like to change.
