Technology has always been a part of our personal and educational lives. We remember when the first iPhone came out, we used iPads in middle school to complete assignments, and carried our laptops and phones everywhere in high school. Especially during isolation, technology enables us to communicate with our friends, learn, or relax by catching up on a Netflix show. The process of creating our planned painted mural was dramatically changed by the closure of school, causing us to modify our approach to a virtual one. We asked members of our grade to submit a portrait and landscape photo to be edited and transformed into the final product. Then, we compiled the mural together using Photoshop over Zoom meetings, emails, and text messages. As the Class of 2020 is confronting the ambiguous and concrete losses of a disrupted senior year of high school, including a traditional graduation ceremony, spring sports season, prom, 18th birthdays and other milestone events, we hope this mural will demonstrate our community coming together and celebrate our achievements.
2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year for the entire world. Every week more and more unbelievable events seem to pile up. For Weston High School the year began with Triple E affecting events like football games and ended abruptly with the Corona pandemic. At first we wanted to create a painted mural that represented the role that technology played in our everyday lives, unfortunately we were not able to complete this in time as we are all quarantined at home. Collectively, the three of us along with the art teachers came up with an idea to create a mural from home which represented Zoom squares. Each box is formatted in a 16:9 ratio, just like the squares seen on a zoom call. We want the mural to represent adaptations the world had to make during COVID-19. School was moved online, meetings were done from home, big groups of friends were forced to communicate through apps like Zoom. We hope this mural will remind the school of the unprecedented time everyone lived through.
It’s often through difficult times that the human spirit prospers and we are able to come together as a community. Through our senior mural, we strived to represent each other’s uniqueness through their silhouette and chosen background. By combining all of our pictures into one collage, as Weston High’s graduating class of 2020, we bridged the physical gap during this stay at home order and reunited as a community. If this year has taught us one thing so far, it would be that demonstrating kindness towards one another can be the driving force in such uncertainty and bring hope to a better future. We hope that our classmates look back at this year and feel proud of all their accomplishments!
