Lady Isabetta Orsini

Kingdom of Æthelmearc

Teacher Bio:

I joined the SCA in the fall of 2009, after becoming instantly drawn to the history, arts, learning, activities, service, and most of all the people! I took to scribal like a duck to water and began calligraphing and illuminating scrolls for my home Kingdom of Æthelmearc in no time. I volunteered at both the Barony and Kingdom levels to retain and assist where ever needed. I left my home Barony of the Rhydderich Hael to travel for mundane work for two years. Upon returning I began more heavily researching Venetian Carnivale masks and have taught classes at Kingdom events, multiple virtual events, and at Pennsic on the subject.

Classes:

History (and a Bit of How-To) of Venetian Carnevale Masks

This class explores the history of the Venetian Carnevale mask beginning with its earliest mention in the 13th century. Though much of the history has been lost to the ages for various reasons, some information remains. By examining the laws surrounding masking historians have been able to infer much of what we know today. The class will also discuss the most common types of masks in period and their uses. The session will wrap up with a display of previous attempts at making masks using techniques similar to those I believe were used in period and a demonstration of those techniques.
