Welcome to Western Civilization II!


Welcome! My name is Robert Leo and I'll be your instructor for HIS-104: Western Civ II. I have been teaching both Western Civ I and II and World History I and II at OCC for several years. I have also spent fourteen years teaching history and government at West Genesee High School. I am currently the Coordinator of Instructional Technology Training at West Genesee, where I train teachers how to integrate technology into their instruction.

Course Description

The second in a two-course sequence: an historical survey of Western Civilization from c. 1500 to the present. It examines the political, economic, social, cultural, religious, and intellectual developments that shaped the West, including its relationship with other regions of the world. Topics covered include the Scientific Revolution, early modern state building, colonialism, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the rise of modern political ideologies, imperialism, the World Wars, the Cold War, and terrorism. Students will analyze primary and secondary sources. There are no prerequisites.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the development of the distinctive features of the history, institutions, economy, society, culture, etc., of Western Civilization.

  2. Relate the development of Western Civilization to that of other regions of the world.

Course Expectations

For every one credit hour spent in the classroom (online or face-to-face), the student is expected to spend two (2) hours studying, reading, and completing assignments outside of class time.

Meet the Teacher

Rob Leo serves as the Coordinator for Instructional Technology Training at West Genesee Central Schools. Previously, he worked as the Model Schools Coordinator at the Central New York Regional Information Center, where he led a team of instructional technologists that planned and delivered professional development related to technology integration for teachers throughout Central New York. Prior to his career in education administration, Rob worked as a social studies teacher at West Genesee High School for thirteen years, a bilingual education teacher at Shea Middle School in the Syracuse City School District for a year, and an ESL teacher in Seoul, South Korea, for a year. Rob is a 1992 graduate of Binghamton University where he received a BA in economics. He is also a 1997 and 2009 graduate of LeMoyne College where he earned an MSEd in secondary education and education leadership, respectively. Follow Rob on Twitter: @rleowg.
